The Mamaroneck Union Free School District has named Charles B. Sampson as its next superintendent, the district's school board announced on Tuesday, June 13.
When he begins his position on Wednesday, Nov. 1, Sampson will replace Robert Shaps, who will be retiring in December 2023, district officials said.
Sampson will be coming to the district from his current position as Superintendent of the Freehold Regional High School District in New Jersey, where he has earned several awards and recognitions since starting in 2011.
These include being named one of “America’s Best-in-State Employers" by Forbes Magazine; being named one of the 100 Future Ready Superintendents by President Obama and the Department of Educational Technology; being named Monmouth County Superintendent of the Year in 2017; and being named New Jersey Region II Superintendent of the Year in 2018.
Sampson said he is excited to be joining a district with a "proven record of innovation and excellence.”
Mamaroneck Board of Education President Ariana Cohen also expressed her excitement at Sampson joining the district.
"We are confident that his 15 years of experience as a successful Superintendent of two high-performing school districts, together with his prior administrative experiences, makes him the ideal successor to lead our district into its next chapter," Cohen said.
Sampson, a parent of four children in middle and high school, holds a Bachelor of Arts in History and a Bachelor of Science in Administration from Caldwell College. He also earned his Eh.D in Educational Leadership from Seton Hall University.
Sampson will be formally introduced to district families at a welcome reception on Tuesday, June 20 at 8:30 p.m. at Mamaroneck High School following his formal appointment by the Board of Education.
